Koffi Olomide case: Kenya deports singer over airport 'kick'

The Kenyan authorities have deported one of Africa's biggest musicians, Koffi Olomide, after he was filmed apparently kicking a woman.

Footage of the incident at Nairobi's international airport was posted online and sparked outrage on social media.

Olomide, from Democratic Republic of Congo, denied assaulting anyone but was arrested hours after arriving in Kenya for a concert.

He was deported to the DRC capital, Kinshasa, with three of his dancers.

Olomide, 60, was accused of kicking one of the women dancers but, speaking to the BBC, he denied kicking anyone and said he had tried to "stop" a "girl who wanted to fight the dancers I came with".

The video shown on Kenya's KTN News shows police intervening to stop the apparent attack on the woman, identified by Kenyan media as one of his dancers.

A Kenyan minister, Youth and Gender Cabinet Secretary Sicily Kariuki, said the singer should be deported and his visa permanently revoked.

Gov’t approves recruitment of over 1,000 lecturers into varsities

President John Dramani Mahama on Saturday said government has given approval for the recruitment of 1,018 new lecturers in all public universities. He said approval of the list presented by the institutions was to boost the faculties of the country’s universities. President Mahama said this at the maiden graduation ceremony of the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) in Ho on Saturday.

A total of 166 students from the School of Allied Health Sciences, School of Basic and Biomedical Sciences, School of Medicine, School of Nursing and Midwifery and School of Public Health graduated, were awarded bachelor degrees. At the maiden Professor John Evans Atta Mills Memorial Lectures by UHAS recently, Professor Samuel Kofi Sefa-Dedeh, Department of Food Process Engineering, School of Engineering Sciences, University of Ghana, called for an end to “academic galamsey”-a situation where lecturers are engaged with more than one tertiary institution on part-time basis, and underscored the need for recruitment of lecturers. 

Five-year-old girl defiled by cousin dies

The five-year-old girl who was defiled by her teenage cousin has passed on at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi, the Ashanti Region capital.

She was pronounced dead at about 8p.m. Saturday and her body has been deposited at the hospital's morgue.

Afia’s health started deteriorating after her ordeal in June this year.

She was diagnosed with Cystitis, an infection of the bladder, which makes it difficult for her to walk or pass waste.

Her 19-year-old cousin, Kofi Dapaah reportedly had sex with her countless times in the absence of her parents. He is currently serving a 24-year jail term.

Afia was expected to undergo another surgery following a first one in June to remove a tumor in her private part that hindered her ability to pass urine or waste.

Until her demise, she was undergoing chemotherapy but her abdomen kept swelling.
She is expected to buried after her body has been released to the family.

Mahama lies on student mattress at Fumbisi SHS

President John Dramani Mahama did the unexpected during his recent tour of the Upper East region when he on his own accord lay on a student mattress inside a new boys’ hostel. And the authorities of the Fumbisi Senior High Agric School in the Builsa South District, where Starr News captured the surprise, are considering making more than just a memorial out of what the president did.

The hostel was among a number of projects the president commissioned and inspected during a two-day tour that also saw him cut the sod for work to begin on the Bolgatanga-Bawku-Pulmakom Road and the Tamne Irrigation Dam in the Garu-Tempane District among others.

I don’t usually speak my mind on show biz because I have a feeling most controversies are calculated to bring someone down and pave way for another. The fact that it mostly touches on the superficial aspect of our lives makes it unattractive to me. The key word here is ‘me’.

Like many people however, I have been overcome by the temptation to speak my mind on what has become known as the Sark-Fest Battle. I won’t pretend to be objective here; I am a fun of Sarkodie who has admiration for Manifest.

In view of this, as much as I try to be objective, my bias will be exposed. I learnt from journalism that: objectivity, subjectively appraised is by itself not reliable’ because no one is free from bias by nature. I won’t pretend I am either.

In Ghana, it is okay to be average and better to remain average. The more successful a person becomes the more hatred he draws. It is more acceptable for a poor man to brag than for a rich man to talk about his wealth. It is okay for Manifest to make claims of being number one than for Sarkodie to say he is the boss.

This is why those who hate Sark really hate him. He is a victim of his own success and given the fact that there is no one to rub shoulders with him at the moment, the new approach is to bring him down so that another overtakes him.

Dallas shooting suspect Micah Johnson 'acted alone'

Micah Johnson, the man accused of killing five police officers in a gun attack during a protest rally in Dallas, acted alone, officials believe.

"We believe now the city is safe," Mayor Mike Rawlings said.

Bomb-making material, rifles and a combat journal were found at the home of Johnson, who was himself killed.

The Dallas protest was against the killing of black men by police, and similar rallies drew thousands across many US cities on Friday.

The demonstrations followed the police killings of Philando Castile in Minnesota and Alton Sterling in Louisiana.

M.anifest misunderstood Sarkodie’s ‘Bossy’ song – Hammer

Record producer and boss of The Last Two Music Group, Da’ Hammer has described the ongoing lyrical battle between Sarkodie and M.anifest as a “classic misunderstanding”.

Facebook tests 'secret message' service

Private messages that can disappear are being trialled by Facebook as it experiments with a new option for those using its Messenger app.

They become hidden after a certain period of time chosen by the author, the firm said.

It is part of a new "secret message" service having a limited trial, Facebook announced.

Senders must choose one device to use it on, as messages sent this way are stored on the device itself.

Those flagged to "disappear" will be deleted from the device as well.

"Starting a secret conversation with someone is optional," it said.

"Secret conversations can only be read on one device and we recognise that experience may not be right for everyone."

Bomb material found at suspect's home - Dallas shooting

Bomb-making material, rifles, ammunition and a combat journal have been found at the home of the suspect in the Dallas shooting, officials say.

Five police officers were killed and seven wounded in a hail of gunfire during a protest on Thursday against the shooting of black men by police.

The suspect, 25-year-old Micah Johnson, died after a long stand-off with police in central Dallas.

Mayor Mike Rawlings said officials believed he was "the lone shooter".

"We believe now the city is safe," the city mayor said at a news conference on Friday.

The protest in Dallas took place after this week's deaths of Philando Castile in Minnesota and Alton Sterling in Louisiana.

Four police officers dead in sniper shooting-Dallas protest

Four Dallas police officers have been shot dead by sniper fire during protests against the shooting of black men by police, the authorities say.

One suspect is in custody after a shootout with police, while a person of interest turned himself in, Dallas police tweeted.

Montie FM Sued Over Judges Death Threats

A Ghanaian citizen, Richard Asante Yeboah has sued Accra based Montie FM for contempt of the Supreme Court over alleged death threats against Ghana’s judges.

Two panelists of Montie FM, Alistair Nelson and Godwin Ako Gunn allegedly threatened to unleash mayhem on Supreme Court and High Courts judges if they make any judgment against the Electoral Commission.

Mr Yeboah in his suit, argued that “the two knew the contemptuous nature of their statements when they stated that the court can jail them and that they were ready to go to jail.”

He is therefore praying the court to “commit the two for contempt of court.”

Israel angered by Facebook hatred rules

Government ministers in Israel have accused Facebook of failing to tackle "inciteful" posts against the country on the social network.

Public security minister Gilad Erdan said Facebook had set "a very high bar for removing inciteful content".

Justice minister Ayelet Shaked wants social media companies to pre-emptively remove content which Israel considers to be a security threat.

Facebook said it worked closely with Israel to tackle threatening content.

Mrs Shaked has complained that threatening content must be manually reported by the website's users before any action can be taken.

M.anifest must be careful with Sarkodie beef - Okraku Mantey

It seems the beef between Sarkodie and M.anifest won't end anytime soon. Social media is awash with fans from both artistes defending their favorite. 

The Head of Programmes at Hitz FM, Mark Okraku Mantey, a music notable, is advising M.anifest to pull the plug and "mind his language."

Mark Mantey said, "sometimes somebody talks to you very dirty and you want to reply dirtier. The more you get dirtier, because of your brand position, the more your brand is affected."
